Our “Champagne of the Month” for June 2018 is produced by Christophe Mignon who is based in the village of Festigny in the Vallée de la Marne.
The domaine has thirty parcels amounting to 6.5 hectares in the villages of Festigny and Le Breuil. Work in the vineyard is carried out by hand and Christophe is certified biodynamic. He also uses homeopathic remedies alongside phytotherapy – a science based on the medical practice of herbalism.
“Coup de Foudre” Brut Nature is a non-vintage wine, the base year being 2010 and consisting of equal parts Chardonnay, Meunier and Pinot Noir. It spends around 9 months in new oak foudres before spending 3 years on the lees. Our wine was disgorged without dosage on 26th August 2014. Alcohol is at 12% abv.
Tasted on 24th May 2018.
Appearance: Pale gold.
Characteristics: Pronounced intensity with primary aromas of lemon, lemon peel, orange peel, grapefruit, red apple, gooseberry, raspberry, roasted apricot and violets. There are secondary notes of toast, short crust pastry, vanilla, cloves, cinnamon and mature cheddar. Tertiary aromas include dried apricot, caramel, honey, hay, ginger, almond and cobnut. It is medium bodied with a creamy mousse and medium (+) finish.
Whilst drinking very well now, it does have potential for further ageing.
A delicious champagne from an outstanding producer.
