Œnothèque: Our library of previous Champagnes of the Month

July 2013

Our cuvée of the month for July comes from Champagne Leclerc Briant, located in the capital of Champagne: Épernay.

This house controls 13 hectares of vineyards, situated in six villages: Cumières, Damery, Dizy, Épernay, Hautvillers and Verneuil. It is under relatively new ownership as the house passed out of the family but we are pleased to see that Biodynamic viticulture is at the heart of the house ethos.

The Rubis de Noirs Millésime 2004 is a deeply rich, extravagant wine. Made from 100% Pinot Noir from Cumières, Hautvillers and Verneuil, the maceration period is a lengthy 5-6 days which produces the closest you will likely come to red Champagne! It is intense yet still retains a lightness of touch with a chocolaty finish. Caramel and cherries are also evident. Dosage is 8gl and malolatic fermentation is encouraged.

This is a seductive, aromatic and versatile wine that is capable of standing up to spicy meat dishes or simply enjoyed on its own or even as a digestif.

Price at source = €24.00
