Our “Champagne of the Month” for November is the Cuvée Or Blanc from Champagne J-M Sélèque, based in Pierry on the Côteaux Sud d’Epernay.

Jean-Marc Sélèque is a serious young vigneron and musician with an artistic flair. Having recently separated his venture from that of his cousin, he is able to have complete autonomy over his vines and his vision for creating truly excellent champagnes. Practising enherbement with a dedication to more natural viticulture, Jean-Marc produces a sumptuous range of wines and has some very exciting ideas for future projects.

The Cuvée Or Blanc is a non-vintage Blanc de Blancs consisting of 100% Chardonnay, the base wine being from the 2009 harvest. The grapes come from three distinctly separate terroirs; all designated Premier Cru where the average age of the vines is 45 years. The plots are on the Côteaux Sud d’Epernay at Pierry, the Vallée de la Marne at Dizy and the Côte des Blancs at Vertus.

After pressing in traditional small volume presses, fermentation takes place both in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels with a 50/50 split. Malolatic fermentation is used along with bâtonnage and there is no fining or filtration. The result is a beautifully crafted and intricately balanced wine, vivid with floral notes and hints of citrus and pâtisserie.

Jean-Marc is a very talented vigneron; we love his ethos and the way in which he creates his wines - definitely one to watch! This particular champagne is stunning and represents incredible value for money.
