The rich and expressive “Amand cuvée du fondateur” from Champagne Maurice Grumier is our February 2017 “Champagne of the Month”.
Fabien Grumier is the fourth generation to cultivate the 8.5 hectares of his family’s estate. Situated in Venteuil in the Western section of the Vallée de la Marne, the vineyards are planted on south facing limestone slopes. Ecological and sustainable viticulture has seen the domaine granted the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certificate.
“Amand cuvée du fondateur” is a tribute to Amand Grumier - Fabien's great grandfather who began producing his own wines in 1928, the first of his family to do so. The latest release is now produced as a vintage, whereas ours is a blend of two years; consisting of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir. Vinification takes place in fût de chênes with regular bâtonnage, no filtration and a dosage of 4gl meaning this wine is extra brut; alcohol is 12.5% by volume. The wine is afforded a minimum 7 years ageing.
Appearance: Medium, gold.
Nose: Pronounced aromas of charred wood, smoke, vanilla, toast, brioche, honey, cinnamon, candied fruit, fresh lemon, green apples, peach, apricot, almond, hazelnut, tobacco and cocoa.
Palate: Medium bodied, it is silky and unctuous with hints of vanilla, toast, brioche, honey, lees, pastry, cinnamon, candied fruit, almond, hazelnut, cocoa, peach, apricot, grapefruit, red and green apple in a rich oxidative style.
An intense and seductive champagne, it is utterly joyous.
