Our “Champagne of the Month” for December 2018 is produced by brothers Michel and Christian Gosset of Champagne Gosset-Brabant, based in the village of Ay on the North banks of the River Marne, famed for its intense Pinot Noir. The Gosset family have been winemakers in the village since 1584.
The domaine controls almost 10 hectares, five of which are in the Grand Cru village of Ay along with 0.45 hectares in the Grand Cru village of Chouilly on the Côte des Blancs. There are holdings in the Premier Cru villages of Mareuil-sur-Ay, Dizy and Avenay-Val-d’Or; all in the Vallée de la Marne.
“Cuvée Gabriel” is a vintage champagne, this incarnation being from 2008. It consists of 85% Pinot Noir from the parcel “Loiselu” (Ay) and 15% Chardonnay from the parcel “Sorangeon” (Chouilly), both of which have an Eastern exposure where the average age of the vines is 50 years. In the winery, the grapes are pressed with a traditional Coquard press and vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks with malolactic fermentation carried out. The wine is unfiltered and does not undergo cold stabilisation. This wine was disgorged on 4th May 2018 with a dosage of 5gl, alcohol is 12.5% abv.
Tasted: 25th November 2018
Appearance: Medium, lemon.
Characteristics: Pronounced intensity with primary aromas of honeysuckle, red apple, quince, lemon zest, orange peel, ripe banana, lychee, passion fruit, raspberry, blueberry, bell pepper, white pepper, kirsch, lemon curd, puréed apple, golden sultana and salinity. There are secondary notes of freshly baked white bread, bread dough, yeast, short crust pastry, sablé biscuit and burnt butter. Tertiary aromas include marmalade, preserved lemon, dried apple, hay, caramel, almond, walnut, honey and ginger. It is full bodied with a delicate mousse and a long finish.
This is an intensely rich and decadent champagne with a hint of “big house” style. Perfectly balanced, the richness gives way to palate cleansing acidity urging you to take another sip! Drinking beautifully now, it has potential to be laid down in a cellar for a good many years to come. Outstanding.
