Œnothèque: Our library of previous Champagnes of the Month

March 2014

Our cuvée of the month for March comes from Champagne Françoise Bedel, located in the village of Crouttes-sur-Marne, at the far western end of the Vallée de la Marne.

They control 8.4 hectares situated on the banks of the River Marne at Crouttes-sur-Marne, Nanteuil-sur-Marne, Charly-sur-Marne and Villiers-Saint-Denis. The majority of the vine stock (78%) is Pinot Meunier with a smattering each of Chardonnay (13%) and Pinot Noir (9%) which is cultivated, certified Biodynamic with chalky and clay soil.

Cuvée Origin’Elle consists of 80% Pinot Meunier, 10% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir, vinified in a mixture of enamelled stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels it is given 4 years on the lees before being riddled and disgorged by hand. Dosage is around 8gl.

A beautiful golden colour with excellent balance and hints of honey, dried fruits and apricot. Once again we have found ourselves seduced by a mesmerising Meunier!

Our bottle was purchased from Cave des Sacres in Reims for approximately €30.00 but expect to pay €26.50 if bought at source.
