Our cuvée of the month for August 2016 is the outstanding “Bulles de Comptoir #4 (Vinorama)” by Charles Dufour.
Charles is located in the village of Landreville in the Côte des Bar and has been certified Biodynamic since 2010; cultivating 6 hectares of vines in the Côte des Bar and Vallée de l’Ource.
This fourth edition of “Bulles de Comptoir” is composed of 60% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Blanc from the villages of Landreville, Essoyes and Celles-sur-Ource, the soil content being a chalk/clay combination. It is a blend of three harvests with 2013 providing the base wine (20%), along with 70% 2011 and 10% 2010. Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation whilst aging on the lees (sediment) takes place in a mixture of fûts de chêne and foudres. The wine was bottled in October 2014 and disgorged in January 2016. The dosage is 4gl and alcohol is at 12% ABV.
An attractive pale gold colour, on the nose it offers autolytic notes of freshly baked bread, toasted brioche, pastry and buttery biscuit. Baked apple, caramel, vanilla, pomegranate, yellow plum and cloves are all evident alongside a delicate hint of lavender. On the palate we have vanilla, butter, biscuit, pastry, hazelnut, caramel and a touch of smokiness. There are vibrant fresh fruits: pomegranate, blood orange, yellow plum, red and green apple. The finish is long and decadent.
This is a complex and heady cuvée from one of Champagne’s young stars.
