Our “Champagne of the Month” for February 2015 is the Cuvée Sainte Anne from Champagne Chartogne-Taillet, based in Merfy on the Montagne de Reims.
Cuvée Sainte Anne is the only non-vintage cuvée produced by Alexandre Chartogne and the blend varies depending on each harvest. Our wine consists of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, the average age of the vines being 25 years; 80% is taken from the 2011 harvest with the remainder from 2010. Vinified in stainless steel tanks with natural yeasts and without filtration, dosage again depends on the blend and will normally be between 4.5gl and 7gl, this wine being 4.5gl.
Chartogne-Taillet produces several single plot cuvées whereas this one is a blend from numerous plots within the village. Working with very natural methods, herbicides and pesticides are not used whilst yearly soil samples are analysed by a laboratory to verify health. The soil types are sandy and clay and this really comes through in the taste with a deep earthy finish. Rich red fruits, citrus and vanilla are also evident in this delightful wine which typically reflects the geology of Merfy.
