Our cuvée of the month for January 2015 and kick-starting the New Year comes from a young vigneron Champagne Etienne Calsac, a Récoltant-Manipulant located in the Grand Cru village of Avize on the Côte des Blancs.
L’Échappée Belle – “The Great Escape” is a non-vintage cuvee consisting of 95% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Noir. Predominantly from Grauves a village which is rarely given the opportunity to take centre stage adds really interesting mineral characteristics to the wine. The base of which comes from the 2009 harvest that is afforded 32 months aging on the lees.
In the Extra Brut version, dosage is 4gl allowing the distinct crisp minerality and chalky salinity from the shallow Grauves terroir to shine through. A hint of toast, apples and gooseberries.
Price at source = €18.10
The Brut version has exactly the same production process but a slightly higher dosage of 8gl. The Grauves characteristics are still evident although slightly more mellow with hints of brioche.
Price at source = €17.40
