Our “Champagne of the Month” for July is produced by Champagne Franck Bonville from the village of Avize on the Côte des Blancs. The family domaine has been in existence since 1900 and Olivier is the fourth generation, having taken the helm in 1996. He has 77 plots at his disposal in the villages of Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger.

 

Since 2011 the domaine has been working towards gaining HVE certification. In the cellar, slow fermentation is carried out in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks. Olivier has created three mono-crus wines from the best plots in each of the three villages. All are vintage wines from the 2012 harvest and the second fermentation takes place under cork - sous liège. Consisting of 100% Chardonnay “Pur Mesnil” was born from three plots “Les Zailleux”, “Le Tilleul” and “Les Hautes Mottes”; harvested and pressed on 24th September. It was bottled in April 2013, disgorgement took place in April 2018 with a dosage of 2gl and sealed with a natural cork. Production was limited to 2500 bottles.

Characteristics: Pronounced intensity with primary aromas of chamomile, honeysuckle, acacia, fresh lemon juice, lemon rind, grapefruit, pineapple, lychee, mandarin, honeydew melon, peach, star anise, bramley apple skin, mint, cut grass, saline, iodine and chalk – reminiscent of seaside air! There are secondary notes of toast, bread dough, brioche and short crust pastry. Tertiary aromas include almond, cobnut, hay, honey, ginger, dried apple and gingerbread. The mousse is delicate and the finish is long.

 

Whilst this champagne is drinking superbly now it would definitely be suitable for further ageing.

 

A beautifully balanced wine from Olivier, the elegant mineral nature of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger blending harmoniously with the generosity afforded to it by the long bottle ageing and fermentation sous liege.
