Here we take a quick look at the villages which form part of the Route Touristique du Champagne. This time, it’s the turn of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.
The village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is situated on the Côte des Blancs, approximately 13km South of Épernay. It is planted with 100% Chardonnay and rated as Grand Cru, meaning that it is scored at 100% for the quality of its grapes.
One of the finest Chardonnay villages, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is home to two of the most prestigious names in Champagne. Firstly, there is Salon, a house that produces just one cuvée, only ever a vintage and only when they deem the vintage year to be good enough for their exacting standards. Secondly there is the walled vineyard: Clos du Mesnil, under the control of Krug and the base for their single vineyard cuvée bearing its name.
There is a decent Négociant-Manipulant in the village, Delamotte which is the sister house to Salon and benefits from their hand-me-downs. The parent company of the two houses is Laurent-Perrier.
Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is a village packed full of decent Récoltant-Manipulants with a number of very impressive houses. There is also the very nice looking Restaurant Le Mesnil, which we yet to try but is on our list of things to do! http://www.restaurantlemesnil.com/
We are aware of one Champagne house: Baradon-Michaudet which provides a Bed & Breakfast facility with four rooms and a gîte that sleeps six people. We have not tasted their wines. http://www.champagne-baradon-michaudet.com/
