Our “Champagne of the Month” for August is produced by Sébastien Mouzon of Champagne Mouzon-Leroux. The family has been winemakers since 1776, now controlling 60 plots spanning 7.5 hectares in the Grand Cru village of Verzy, located on the Grande Montagne de Reims.  

 

Sébastien is clearly passionate about the environment and the eco-system within his vineyards. Certified by Ecocert, the domaine has been practicing Biodynamics since 2008; whilst also planting 500 trees and shrubs throughout the plots and introducing sheep and chickens for winter grazing. The plots have a North-Eastern exposure whilst the soil consists of calcareous clay and loam with a chalk sub-soil dating to the Lower Campanian period.

 

In the cellar, indigenous yeasts are used for alcoholic fermentation along with spontaneous malolactic fermentation – this is to limit the amount of sulphur required. Depending on the wine, there is either very little or no sulphur added. Both oak and stainless steel vats are used in the vinification process.

 

Cuvée L’angélique is a blanc de blancs consisting of 100% Chardonnay and it is a vintage wine coming from the 2012 harvest. Vinification was a combination of fûts de chêne (55%) and small stainless steel vats (45%). The wine was afforded 6 months on the lees and it was neither fined nor filtered. Aged for 56 months, disgorgement took place in October 2017 whereupon no dosage was added and the bottle was sealed with a natural cork. Production was limited to 1102 bottles.

Characteristics: Pronounced intensity with primary aromas of honeysuckle, fresh lemon juice, grapefruit, gooseberry, green apple, lychee, pineapple, honeydew melon, mango chutney, baked apple and Parma violets. There are secondary notes of fresh bread, toasted brioche, butter, lemon buttercream, vanilla and lemon meringue pie. Tertiary aromas include caramel, marzipan, dried apple, hay, honey, toffee apple and ginger. The mousse is delicate and the finish is long.

 

This champagne is drinking excellently now but it is certainly viable for further ageing.

 

A delicious and inviting wine from Sébastien, generous yet has a wonderful tension with lip-smacking acidity.
