Our “Champagne of the Month” for May 2019 is produced by Vincent Charlot from the village of Mardeuil which is located immediately to the East of Épernay. The commune is situated on the Côteaux d’ Épernay which is in turn a sub-region of the Vallée de la Marne. Vincent took over the family business in 2001 and has 4.2 hectares under his control. He is certified Demeter having been farming biodynamically since 2010. Vincent is a true Champagne character, proud and passionate about his winemaking, this passion runs from the earth to the bottle.
The cuvée “L’Or des Basses Ronces” is a vintage wine coming from the 2013 harvest. It takes its name from a single parcel in Mardeuil named “Basses Ronces” which means low brambles. This plot is 0.4 hectares and has shallow soil with chalk at a depth of 40cm. The wine consists of 100% Chardonnay which was fermented in small old oak barrels over a period of 11 months. Only indigenous yeasts were used and the wine did not go through cold stabilisation, filtering or malolactic fermentation. Bottled in April 2014 it was disgorged without dosage in August 2018 and sealed with a natural cork. Alcohol is at 12.7%abv and a total of 2414 bottles were produced.
