Route Touristique

Here we take a quick look at the villages which form part of the Route Touristique du Champagne. This time, it’s the turn of Avize.

The village of Avize is situated on the Côte des Blancs, approximately 9km south of Épernay. It is planted solely with Chardonnay and rated as Grand Cru, meaning that it is scored at 100% for the quality of its grapes.

The village is home to a number of interesting domaines of excellent quality and is of course home to one of the most important champagne producers of all – Anselme Selosse of Domaine Jacques Selosse. For it is this legend of champagne who paved the way for small producers to create great wines and be taken seriously not just in Champagne but the wine World as a whole. The school of œnology is based in the village, playing an important role in educating the wine-makers of the future.

Domaine Jacques Selosse own the wonderful Hôtel Restaurant Les Avisés which we cannot recommend highly enough, a beautiful champagne themed hotel with a great restaurant and of course champagne list to match.

Avize offers chardonnay purists a wealth of cuvées from crisp and clean wines vinified in enamelled stainless steel tanks to the rich buttery wines created in wood.

Champagne houses we can personally recommend are as follows:

Jacques Selosse

Agrapart

De Sousa

Etienne Calsac

Corbon

Franck Bonville

Michel Gonet

Petit & Bajan

Veuve J. Lanaud

Foliage

Le Brun Servenay

Also in the village is the large cooperative – Union Champagne who market their better wines under the De Saint Gall label.
