Here we take a quick look at the villages which form part of the Route Touristique du Champagne. This time, its the turn of Ambonnay.
The village of Ambonnay is situated on the Montagne de Reims, approximately 18km East of Épernay. It is planted with 84% Pinot Noir, 16 % Chardonnay and rated as Grand Cru, meaning that it is scored at 100% for the quality of its grapes.
A number of the growers in this village are now working biodynamically. Biodynamic agriculture is a sustainable method of organic farming with a more concentrated ethos of respect for the relationship between land, vines and animals. It is said to accentuate the terroir character of its wines whilst also increasing the complexity and depth of flavour. Indeed this is evident with Ambonnay where you will find excellent, ripe Pinot Noir dominated cuvées with great terroir character and deep, rich Chardonnay that offers a wonderful alternative to the wines from the Côte des Blancs.
Ambonnay really is a champion village for the Récoltant-Manipulant with a number of very impressive houses. There are at least two Chambres d'Hôtes in the village, both of which are located at Champagne houses. Champagne Soutiran is home to "Les Coccinelles" and there is one at Champagne Th. Petit. We are aware of one restaurant: Auberge Saint-Vincent. We have not experienced these but Ambonnay would provide an excellent stop for a couple of days with so many great Champagne houses within walking distance.
